What is a print server?
Normally, when you share a printer, you need to connect it to one computer that other systems in the network connect through to access it.

A printer server makes it possible to share a printer without connecting it to another computer. It allows you to connect the printer directly to your wired or wireless router. This way, you don't have to power up a computer every time you wish to print - or leave one on all the time.

A printer server essentially pretends to be a computer so the computers on the network can control it. A print server usually isn't necessary on higher end laser printers because they often have built in networking capabilities already.

Print servers come in both wired and wireless models. You can also choose a USB or parallel port model, depending on what connector your printer uses. There are also print servers that allow you to connect multiple printers. Some broadband routers also include built in print servers.
