How do I know if I shopping web site is secure?

The easiest way to find out if a shopping site is secure is to look for the little padlock icon at the bottom of your browser window. This indicates a site is using Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology to protect your transaction. In addition, look for a site's security policy to find out what steps are being taken to ensure not only your transaction is safe, but your personal information is being kept private. For this reason, always make sure your browser software is up-to-date.

One consideration: never click on a link sent via e-mail to log into any website accounts you may have. Always go to the main site and log in manually to avoid the possibility of being a victim of e-mail scams (known as phishing). In addition, remember that no reputable business will ever ask you to send personal information via e-mail. In addition, for important business, they will usually send you a letter in the mail or call you on the phone. In the case of a phone call, they will ask you certain questions to prove both you and they are who you appear to be.
