What are DSL filters for?

When you subscribe to DSL service, data frequencies outside of those used by normal speech begin to be transmitted on your phone lines. While this provides a fast connection over standard phone lines (without the need to dial-in with a standard modem), it creates noise on the line.

The way DSL providers overcome this is to place filters on the phone jacks serving other devices. This prevents the data frequencies from affecting the operation of your phones, fax machine or television boxes that require phone connections.

When you receive your DSL modem, it will usually include several filters. These devices will have one jack for standard devices and one for the DSL modem. This means you can place the DSL modem anywhere in the house, but still plug other devices into the same jack.
