How much memory does my computer need?
A computer running Windows XP should have at least 512MB of RAM. It's best to have more, but for most people, anything over 1GB is more than they need. On the other hand, gamers, video editors and graphic artists should have at least 1GB, though more is better for gaming, 3D rendering and editing HD video. For Windows Vista, expect to add and additional 512MB to any of the above figures. For example, your starting point in Vista should be 1GB.

Of course, memory is only part of the equation. Processor and video card performance also play a role in how well a system runs.
