GENERAL INFO.
Do all PVRs or DVRs require a phone line connection?
Standalone DVRs require a phone line connection because they dial in to get their guide data. However, most cable an satellite DVRs do not require a phone line.

Most all-in-one units get their guide data through the same cables the programming comes through. This eliminates the need for a nightly phone call for guide data. In addition, the guide data can be updated more often this way.

Some DVRs will give you a message every few days or so requesting you plug in a phone line. However, this message can usually be ignored.

One thing to consider: Pay Per View and On Demand programming (as well as some sports subscriptions) often use the phone line for purchases. In this case, you'll need that phone connection.
